What is SUP?

SUP is short for Stand Up Paddling or stand up paddle-boarding.  Firstly, it’s an activity that is done with a board that ranges from 9-13 feet.  Secondly, there is a cord that hooks to one of your feet in case you fall off the board you can recover it quickly.  Thirdly, an adjustable paddle completes this setup.  Usually the paddle is defined by your height so you can adjust and see how comfortable it is as you paddle.

Forth, often folks flock to lakes, ponds, and calm oceans to partake in this tranquil exercise.  However, here in Iceland we gravitate towards the glacier lagoons for such activity!  Come along with us today as we share one of our favorite locations on where to stand up paddle in Iceland…  SUP at Sólheimajökull Glacier Lagoon!

Where is Sólheimajökull?

Mýrdalsjökull is Iceland’s 4th largest glacier.  Furthermore, it has countless glacier outlets you can visit.  One of our favorites is Sólheimajökull (translation: sunny world glacier) located in South-Central Iceland.  Directly off of Route 1 if driving from the west to east, you’ll find the pull off sign for Sólheimajökull on the left hand side.  From Reykjavik the drive time is around 2 hours 15 minutes.  Also, feel free to use this Google Map Link too to help you get there.  After your discovery of the glacier outlet or SUP at Sólheimajökull Glacier Lagoon, be sure to check out the town of Vik!
